Artist Statement

The idea behind the photo for Childhood is based on the mental disorder known as Peter Pan Complex. Peter pan complex is when a person cannot mentally age beyond that of a child. This is typically due to trauma in childhood and their mental growth being subsequently stunted. This is my take on the word Child hood. I want to depict this disorder in a relatively blunt sense and make it as obvious as possible. This isn't a widely known disorder, but it can completely disrupt the lives of a person and those around them.

In order to depict this disorder I attempted to use quite a bit of symbolism within the blunt first glance of the image. At first look this is a picture of an adult playing with legos. Upon closer inspection, however, a person will begin to see the hints of normal adult reality closing in. Along the outside of the image is a badge from the person's supposed place of work, a checkbook, a newspaper, and bills. They are on the outside of this person's set up to represent society pressuring this person to simply overcome their mental stunting and become a normal adult. The person has no visible body language as their are no pressing emotions over this. The person emotional growth was stunted with their mental growth and as such is unpredictable and varies. Overall it is meant to convey the idea of an adult stuck in the mentality of child and the struggle that is presented with that.
