Storytelling

Artist Statement

This photo is based off the mental disorder commonly known as Pathological Lying. A Pathological Liar is someone who has ingrained lying as a habit in their laugh. It is second nature to lie for them, even if they don't necessarily care or want to. In fact, in some cases it takes more effort not to tell the truth than just make up exaggeration or lie. Pathological Liars are, in short, professional storytellers. Their skill set is the very idea of Storytelling and they do it constantly. They make up big and small stories even when they don't necessarily care about the truth. They are very good at making up intricate and simple stories alike.

In order to showcase this idea of lying I attempt to utilize universal symbols for a liar on this relatively simple picture. The first major part is that this person is crossing their fingers behind their back. This is the widely accepted symbol that someone is lying. Along with that the other universal symbol for lying is his nose. His nose looks normal at first glance, bit upon closer inspection one will realize that the shadow of his face has an elongated nose. This is to call forth the idea of Pinnochio's nose in the audience. The nose is especially long as way to show the mass amount of lies this person has told. He posed as though he is about to tell someone a secret to even further convey that sense of secrecy and made up stories. He is looking at the camera with a mischevious smirk to indicate that this particular pathological liar is not too upset with the tales he is spinning. Overall, this image is supposed to convey a sense of lying and distrust in the audience and further push the idea that pathological liars are master storytellers.
