Mask

Final Artwork

Artist Statement

This piece was based on the word "Mask". When I think of the word Mask I think of interchangeable expressions and the ability to cover one's true face. I am basing this off of a mental disorder, and the disorder this most connected with for me was Disassociative Identity Disorder, also know as Multiple Personality Disorder. This is where people have multiple personalities in their one mind. This changing of personalities reminds me of the  changing of a mask. The way each personality can cover the dominant or original personality is similar to the way a mask can change and cover the original face and features of a person. The idea of a person's multiple personalities being like the masks they involuntarily use to cover themselves is an idea that I feel greatly inspired to represent.

When setting up the photo, the use of real masks was too literal and therefore avoided. I painted the faces of the different personalities on the skin of the person for two reasons. One, to represent how these personalities are an innate part of the person and connect truly be separated, but may one day possibly be absorbed into the original person. Two, to show how it can truly cover and change a person while still keeping a few features. The four personalities were to be different in order to show four different. The hands were also used with faces in order to have more than two different faces; also, to show how the mask can cover not only the original personality, but layer over each other to completely encompass a person. The image is black and white with only the red lines in order to show the true split between each personality and mask.

In the future, were I to redo this photo I would do the faces in a different way. The faces would be a bit more realistic and intricate than they are now. I think it would add more impact and truly create the effect and image I am going for. Overall, I am fairly proud of how it turned out, and were I to do it again there really isn't too much I would change.
