Artist Statement
This picture is meant to represent the mental disorder Pyromania. This mental disorder is when people have an unhealthy obsession with fire and setting things on fire. They have a tendency to both intentionally and unintentionally set things on fire and it can be very disruptive to not only their lives, but the lives of those around them. This mental disorder is in and of itself very dangerous. It is one of the more physically destructive mental disorders and is only mildly well known.
In order to represent Pyromania in this photo I used a variety of symbols and objects. The first is obviously fire and I felt it must be in the picture because fire is directly central to the disorder. The idea of the photo is that this person is obsessed with the fire. In order to more fully show the obsession I used the flame and the viewer can also see the flame reflected in this persons eye. It is meant to be as if the flame is part of them and they are very, very focused on it. The photo itself is meant to be simple and straightforward because the disorder is simple and straightforward. They are both meant to be very upfront and neither have anything deep that they are hiding.
