Artist Statement

The idea I show is a representation of the word Order in reference to the mental disorder Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. OCD is a is a common, chronic, and long-lasting disorder in which a person has uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts (obsessions) and behaviors (compulsions) that they feel the urge to repeat over and over. A very common urge a person suffering from OCD may have is the urge for order and/or cleanliness. In many cases, as well, this disorder is grown from the need for control in a person's life, or a past in which they experienced a traumatic lack of control.

In order to showcase this mental disorder I used a very common object, which are m&ms, in order to show how this disorder isn't necessarily a crazy and unusual disease; it is in fact a very common one and can happen in very minor ways in a persons daily life. In order to show this aspect of order the m&ms are arranged in color order in straight lines across. They also spell out the word control to more obviously show a persons innate need for control that may rule their life. The black background was used to not only make the colors stand out brighter, but as opposed to a white background this background creates a darker, more dramatic feel to the picture which is what I want the audience to feel. Were I to redo this picture I would like to make the lines straighter. I would also like to include a person's hand placing the m&ms.
